HP PCs - Change or reset the computer password in Windows 10

If you cannot remember your password or need to change it, you have several options.

HP recommends using a Microsoft account for signing into Windows. Using a Microsoft account offers many benefits, including easy password recovery. If you currently have a local user account, consider switching to a Microsoft account after recovering or changing your current password. Note:

If you cannot sign in with your original password, make sure that caps lock is not on and the keyboard layout matches your country/region. If available, use other methods to sign in, such as a password hint, PIN, or a picture password.

Reset your Microsoft account password

If you use a Microsoft email address and password to sign in, you can reset or change the password from any web browser.

Change your local password when you know your current password

Use the Windows account sign-in options if you know your current computer password and want to change it to something different.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Sign-in options.

  2. Under Password, click Change, and then follow the on-screen instructions to create a new password and hint.

Change your local password from another user account

Sign in using another account to manage another account in Windows. The account must have administrator rights. You might need help from the account owner to complete these steps.

  1. Sign in to the computer with the other user account.

  2. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

  3. Click User Accounts, and then click User Accounts again.

  4. Click Manage another account.

    Note:

    If Manage another account is not available, the account does not have administrative rights. The account must have administrator rights to reset your password.

  5. Select the account with the password you want to change.

  6. Click Change the password, and then follow the on-screen instructions to create a new password and password hint.

  7. Sign out of the account, and then sign in to your original account using your new password.

Use a previously created local password reset disk or USB drive

Reset your local Windows account password from a reset disk or USB flash drive from the Forgotten Password Wizard.

  1. Turn on the computer and attempt to sign in.

  2. On the The password is incorrect. Try again. screen, click OK.

  3. Insert the password reset disk or USB flash drive into the computer, and then click Reset password. The Password Reset Wizard opens.

  4. Click Next, select the password key location from the drop-down menu, and then click Next.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a new password and password hint.

  6. When done, click Next, and then click Finish.

    Note:

    You do not need to create a new password reset disk for the new password.

Have a computer repair service recover your local password

If other password recovery methods are unavailable or unsuccessful, contact a local computer repair service. Many services offer password recovery for a fee.

Reset your computer when all other options fail

If all attempts to recover your password are unsuccessful, you do not need to discard the computer. Instead, reset your PC to completely start over, creating a new password in the process.

CAUTION:

Reset this PC erases all files and local passwords. This resets the computer to the last known good version of Windows 10. After the reset, a list of apps that are no longer available is saved on the Desktop. You can reinstall apps and software from the Microsoft Store or from installation discs.

  1. On the sign-in screen, press and hold the shift key, click the power icon , select Restart, and continue pressing the shift key until the Choose an option screen displays.

  2. Click Troubleshoot.

  3. Click Reset this PC, and then click Remove everything.

  4. Click Only the drive where Windows is installed.

  5. Click Just remove my files, and then click Reset.

    Windows reinstalls the operating system. When complete the Windows welcome screen displays.
